    UPSC ESE exam pattern contains three stages of exams, stage I (i.e) preliminary exam contains paper 1 – 2 hour paper for 200 marks on general studies & engineering aptitude, paper 2 – 3 hour paper for 300 marks on a specific engineering discipline. Stage II (i.e) Main Exam contains paper 1 – 3 hour paper for 300 marks on specific engineering discipline Paper 2 – 3 hour paper for 300 marks on a specific engineering discipline. Stage III contains Personality Test of 200 marks

    The Engineering Services (Preliminary/ Stage-I) Examination will consist of two objective type (multiple choices) questions papers and carrying a maximum of 500 marks (Paper 1 – 200 Marks & Paper II – 300 Marks). Only those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary/ Stage-I Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Mains/ Stage-II Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Mains/ Stage-II Examination. The Marks obtained in Preliminary/ Stage-I Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Mains/ Stage-II Examination will be counted for determining their final order of merit.     it may be noted here that the UPSC reserves the right to change the marks of any section or fix the qualify marks for any section(s). Conventional papers must be answered in English. Question papers will be set in English only. The Commission have discretion to fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all the papers of the examination. The Objective Type papers as contained in Section-I of the Plan of the Examination will be evaluated first and evaluation of the Conventional Type papers contained in Section-II of the Plan of Examination will be done only of those candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in Objective types papers, as fixed by the Commission.

Wrong answers will get 1/3rd negative marking. Stage II — Main Exam — 300 marks + 300 marks Candidates who qualify in the preliminary exam will appear for this main exam which will only have conventional (subjective) questions in the chosen engineering stream Paper 1 – 3 hour paper for 300 marks on specific engineering discipline Paper 2 – 3 hour paper for 300 marks on a specific engineering discipline Stage III — Personality Test — 200 marks The personality test / interview is conducted for candidates who qualify on the basis of the written examination.     IES/ESE exam recruitment exam will be conducted through three stages – Preliminary, Mains exam and Personal interview round. The will be conducted in offline mode. Preliminary exam has 2 objective papers whereas Mains exam has 2 conventional papers. IES Prelims paper 1 is common for every student while paper 2 is candidate of engineering steam. Mains exam is compeletly based on engineering discipline.The medium of both exam is English only. Every wrong answer will deductes one-third of the mark in prelims.The final stage is Personality Test. Interview round need skills such as metal caliber, mental alertness, leadership qualities, initiative & Intellectual curiosity, mental & physical energy and social traits and interest in current affairs.
